Base64 Encode / Decode

Encode text or decode Base64 with one click.

About this tool

Base64 is a coding scheme that represents binary or text data using only printable ASCII characters — letters, digits, and a couple of symbols. It exists because many systems (email, URLs, some databases and config formats) were designed to carry text safely but choke on raw binary or control characters. Encoding to Base64 lets those systems transport arbitrary data without corruption. You will run into Base64 constantly. It embeds small images directly inside CSS or JSON as data URLs. It carries file attachments through email via MIME. It stores opaque tokens in cookies and auth headers. It lets you pass binary blobs through text-only APIs. Our tool converts between plain text and Base64 so you can inspect a value, build a data URL, or recover the original without writing a line of code. Paste text and press Encode to get its Base64 form; paste a Base64 string and press Decode to recover the original. The whole conversion happens locally in your browser, so credentials, keys, and personal data never touch a server. This is not a fringe benefit — Base64 is routinely used to wrap things that look secret, and you should never paste real secrets into a random third-party site that might log them. A critical misunderstanding to clear up: Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone who has the string can decode it in a click. It obfuscates, it does not protect. Never use it as a way to hide a password or sensitive value, and never assume a "base64-encoded" field is in any way secure. If you need secrecy, use real encryption and a key management system. Use this tool to inspect tokens during debugging, construct data URLs for icons and tiny assets, verify what an API actually returned, or teach yourself how encoding works. It sits alongside the hex and binary converters in this toolbox, which together cover the three most common ways engineers inspect raw bytes. As with every tool here, expand the copy with original, example-driven content for your audience before you monetize.
